Take Care Of Yourself
The past two weeks I have been sick. Not your typically flu or cold either, I was completely robbed of energy. I always felt tired, achy and just generally under the weather. In addition to that both my children were sick too, but we could not pinpoint what it was. A few visits to the doctor later it was decided that we all had a very severe case of the flu. My children rebounded much quicker than I did (thank goodness), but it has definitely made keeping up with household chores, the kids, work and blogging near impossible.
I am finally (knock on wood) starting to feel better and more like my usual self. The reason I believe I am starting to feel better is that I finally called in for back-up. I called my mom and she was more than willing to help. She wasn’t even aware that I was still feeling sick because I had emailed her last week saying that we were all on the mend. She offered to pick up the kids the next day and keep that at her house for a few days. I have never been so relieved to see her car pull up in the driveway the next day. My kids were excited to stay at Grandma’s and I was excited to get some much needed uninterrupted rest. And that is what I did. I camped out in bed. I took care of myself by taking long baths, eating properly and resting. Sometimes it felt as though I had not slept in years, with my body and mind craving even more rest. That is when I realized that I had been so busy caring for my children that I had forgotten to care for myself. No wonder my body was taking the flu so hard… it was in need of serious repair. After a few days of rest and then a thorough clean of the house I felt so much better- rejuvenated and revitalized. My mom brought the kids back later that day and I was so happy to see them. I was physically and mentally ready to care for them again.
The lesson I guess of the past two weeks was that in order to take proper care of others you need to take care of yourself first. Don’t put yourself on the backburner because it will catch up with you. Put aside an hour or more a day to dedicate entirely to yourself. Whether it be reading, yoga, writing, exercising or just relaxing, do it. Your kids will appreciate the healthy and happy you that comes from taking care of yourself. Make sure to take care of yourself by getting the proper amount of rest, eating right, exercising and listening to your body.
